Objective of reduction in emissions contributed by the means of transportation and reduction in dependency on fossil fuels by promoting utilisation of energy from renewable sources of power generation have made the electric vehicle technologies a great concern of public and environmental interest. An electric vehicle consists of on board energy sources, converter/inverter, traction motor and associated monitoring and control system. To achieve the required energy and power density, multiple energy sources are connected to the DC-Bus of the vehicle through appropriate converter interface. This arrangement can be termed as Supply System/Energy storage system. Such a sub-system can have additional objective of energy recovery during regenerative braking and reduction in on board battery current ripples to facilitate extended range of the vehicle and the life of batteries. AC motors of permanent and non-permanent magnet type are popular candidates of traction motor. For AC type motors operation of VSI for require information of rotor position, so traction motor together with VSI can be considered as another sub-system and can be termed as traction system. Consideration of electric vehicles as sources of distributed power generation is a hot topic and has issues of conductive and wireless energy exchange with grid. Thus another sub-subsystem can be considered as charging/grid interface system.
